Why Is My Rain Coat “Dry Clean Only”?

April 14, 2010 | 10 Comments

Some things in life just leave me scratching my head. Sometimes things just don’t make sense. Why is my rain coat “dry clean only”? Seriously. Rain coats are made to get wet. Why are they often “dry clean only”? I’m sure it has something to do with the fabric and so on and so forth, but really….can’t I just wash it on the delicate cycle in my washing machine? Scratch, scratch, scratch my head.

While there are many things in this life I don’t understand, there are some things for sure: the treasures of truth in God’s Word are sure and trustworthy. In freedom I raise my hands and proclaim, “I know nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified.” And with sharing that message of the gospel, the Spirit’s power is demonstrated, and faith rests on God’s power. How perfectly beautiful!

“When I came to you, brothers, I did not come with eloquence or superior wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I came to you in weakness and fear, and with much trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on men’s wisdom, but on God’s power.” 1 Corinthians 2:1-5

God’s power. Not men’s wisdom. No scratching my head there!

Knowing Christ, Him crucified and raised from the dead is sufficient. That’s the gospel. The gospel itself holds God’s power for those who believe. “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” Romans 1:16

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; He is the faithful God, keeping His covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commands.” Deuteronomy 7:9

I know God’s ways are not my ways. His thoughts are not my thoughts. Oh how freeing! “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,’ declares the LORD. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.'” Isaiah 55:8-9 I don’t always understand God’s ways and what He is working out in my life, the lives of those I love and in the world. But I do know a few things for sure. I know Love. I know God loves me perfectly. I love my family more deeply than I ever could have imagined. I know my family loves me. I know this: “God is love.” 1 John 4:8

I know His ways are perfect. His Word is flawless. He is my shield. “As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is flawless. He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.” Psalm 18:30

I find such freedom in not knowing so much and in not resting in men’s wisdom. I find freedom in seeking out His ways, His precepts, His Word, Him. “I will walk about in freedom, for I have sought out Your precepts.” Psalm 119:45

I certainly don’t know all the answers, but I am content knowing the One who does. I don’t claim to know it all, I only claim to know the All-In-All, His grace, His mercy, His forgiveness, His truth and His perfect love.

What are you scratching your head about? And what do you know for sure?

“Jesus said, ‘If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.'” John 8:31-32

“Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom You have sent.” John 17:3

“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.” 1 Corinthians 1:17

Sharon, this is a great post because truly, why is a raincoat dry clean only??? And seriously, the only perfect love is His love for us. I have been scratching my head this week about illness, why it strikes, when it strikes, who it strikes…I'll probably never know those answers but I do know the divine Healer and man, is He ever amazing.

As always, thank you for sharing your heart and His Word in ways that minister to others. You are a treasure, my friend. Praying you are having a completely blessed day!

    Love you!
    Heather

That is a funny kind of raincoat, but it sure is pretty!

I'm so thankful that I never have to earn God's love. I'm thankful that when I'm confused, I can crawl up in His lap and let Him handle everything, especially my scratch your head, don't know what to do, kind of problems.
