A long-time friend shared part of this with me last week. I was intrigued and Googled for the entire prayer. I pray it blesses, encourages and challenges you as it has me. Perhaps I’ve been sailing too closely to the shore. Disturb me, Lord. May my dreams and vision be completely yielded to only Your perfect will and Your dreams for me.
Prayer of Sir Francis Drake
(written in 1577)
Disturb us, Lord, when
Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we have dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.
We ask You to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push into the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
“In his heart a man plans his course,
but the LORD determines his steps.”
Proverbs 16:9
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,’
declares the LORD,
‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you,
plans to give you hope and a future.'”
Jeremiah 29:11

That prayer is so powerful. Reminds me of Lysa's "Unsettle Me" prayer at the beginning of this year. A call away from complacency to walk in holiness.
Adding this to my favourites!

Wow, what wonderful words to wake up to this morning, Sharon. Thank you for this penetrating prayer.
Today I pray, "Disturb Me, O God. Make my heart so very tender to You, to Your Heart, to Your Desires. Shake me loose from the things of this world and lift my eyes to the heavens. Give me eyes to see and ears to hear heavenly whispers to lead me step by step today."
So thankful for you sweet friend,
Wendy

Oh how true this is! I have had to learn that running to comfort isn't necessarily where God wants us. In times of being where He has led me to serve Him, there have been times that I became fearful after a time and began to run! But what He really wants is for us to need Him, to look to Him, to be uncomfortable enough at times where He is our only answer and guide. There is where I've grown and trusted Him the most and have seen His wonders!!
Thank you Sharon. Your blog is always such a blessing to me.
